Marvel Meets SEGA 1: The Amazing HedgeSpider!
Chapter 1: Along Came a Spider...
It was just another day at the Empire City High School, students were either studying, texting, or, as in the case of one Peter 'Sonic' the hedgehog and his adopted brother Miles 'Tails', being beaten up by bullies.
"So you think you're fast, huh 'Sonic'?" Jettison Q. Hawkington, aka 'Jet' the hawk, said as he punched him hard in the gut.
"I'm certainly faster than you, Jettison." Sonic said, only to receive another kick to the face in response.
"Shut up, Peter! You and your geeky freak of a friend are NOT faster than me!" Jet angrily yelled just as the bell rang.
"C'mon Jet, we'll finish up later." Jessica 'Wave' the Swallow said.
"Fine, later wimps." Jet said he and his two friends ran back into the school.
Sonic slowly picked himself up and gathered his fallen books and papers. "You okay Tails?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." the fox cub said, rubbing the two tails which gave birth to his nick-name.
"Good, now lets get going. We don't want to be late for Doctor Morgan's class!" Sonic said as he ran into the school, with his adopted brother following behind him. When they reached the classroom though, they didn't find the kind Doctor Curt Morgan, but instead a black furred Jackal wearing a lab coat.
"You two are late." the substitute teacher said. "Now sit."
"Um... yes sir." Sonic said nervously as he sat down.
The jackal seemed to stare at Tails for a second before addressing the class. "As I was just about to say before being interrupted, I am Professor Miles Warren, your substitute teacher, but seeing as there is already another Miles in this class, just call me Professor Warren."
Tails raised his hand. "Where's Doctor Morgan?"
"Doctor Morgan is sick today, and had to stay in." Prof. Warren explained.
"Oh." Tails said, lowering his hand.
"Now then, we shall discuss the structure of various kinds of cells for today's lesson." Prof. Warren said, and for the next hour they studied genetics and cellular structure.
"According to this schedule, we were supposed to to go to Oscorp to see the labs after the lesson, correct?" Prof. Warren asked as he looked over the day's schedule. "Yes, we were. Very well." he said. "Pack up your books, we're going to the labs now." he said, the students complying.
"Oh, I can't wait to see the labs!" Tails said excitedly.
"I know! Doctor Robotnik's work is unparalleled!" Sonic said with an equal amount of excitement.
"Of course wusses like you would be excited about seeing some stupid lab." Jet said in a bored tone of voice.
"Hey! Doctor Robotnik is the greatest scientific mind in the country!" Sonic said. "His advancements have allowed us to-"
"Blah, blah, blah!" Jet interrupted.
"What a jerk..." Tails muttered.
"Hey, just ignore him, buddy." Sonic said, stretching in his seat.
"I know." Tails said sadly, looking up and noticing Prof. Warren staring at him from the corner of his eye.
"Something wrong Tails?" Sonic asked, noticing Tails looked a bit disturbed, but when Tails looked back at Prof. Warren, he was going over the days schedule.
"No, nothing's wrong." Tails said.
The rest of the trip to Oscorp was uneventful, and once the students got out of the bus, they saw an overweight, bald scientist with a large mustache and wearing a lab coat waiting for them. "Hello there. My name is Doctor Otto Robotnik, and I will be your guide during today's trip."
"Whatever, Egghead." Jet said in a bored tone.
"...please do not call me such things." Dr. Robotnik said in a sad tone. "Follow me." he said, leading them through the labs, though only Sonic and Tails were truly excited about the visit.
Doctor Robotnik lead them through the building, showing them the various devices and gadgets that they were developing. "-and over here we are are developing magnetic levitation for personal transport." Dr. Robotnik said, pointing towards a set of what looked like hoverboards. "And here..." Doctor Robotnik began as he lead them to a room marked BIOENGINEERING "...we are working on treating various diseases through combinations of radiation and cross-species genetics. In fact..." he lead them over to a group of containers, each holding a different kind of spider. "These fifteen spiders may help people who have lost-"
"Fourteen." Amy Gwendoline Rose, a pink hedgehog, interrupted.
"I beg your pardon?" Dr. Robotnik asked.
"There's only fourteen spiders here." she explained, pointing to an open container.
"Oh... well, one of the other scientists must have removed it for experimentation." Dr. Robotnik said, though it was clear he looked nervous. "A-anyways, in the robotics lab, we are developing a set of arms to help scientist interact with dangerous environments..." he said, leading the group to another room, except for Sonic and tails.
"You go on ahead Tails, I'm gonna take some pictures of the spiders for the school newspaper." Sonic said, pulling out his camera.
"Alright, but make it fast!" Tails said, running to catch up with the group.
"I will." Sonic said, taking aim with his camera and snapping some photos, unaware of a spider, crawling down to him, and biting him on the shoulder. "Gah!!" he said, brushing off the spider and following Tails, not feeling very well. 'Was the spider poisonous?' he thought with worry, and his ill feelings continued throughout the rest of the day, even when he got home.
And the moment they arrived there, Sonic & Tails were given strong hugs from Sonic's Aunt May & Uncle Charles, or Chuck as they called him.
"Where have you been boys?" Chuck asked.
"We stopped by the arcade before coming back here." Tails explained, hugging May back.
"Oh, but did you bring the fruits I asked for?" May asked.
"Yes Aunt May." Tails said, taking his backpack off and pulling out some apples.
"Thank you." Aunt May said, hugging him and kissing the top of his forehead.
"Hey sonny, is somethin' wrong?" Chuck asked Sonic.
"Nah, I'm good." Sonic said with a tired smile.
"Are you sure? You look a little pale." Aunt May said worriedly.
"I just... need some rest." Sonic said, heading towards his room.
"Well, alright..." Chuck said worriedly.
In his room Sonic held his head, for he felt much worse than he actually let in. He stumbled towards his bed, collapsing onto the covers, too tired and weak to get changed. Slowly the blue hedgehog fell asleep, unaware of the changes going on inside him.
